Wellness by Mason Invites You to Make This the Year: Great American Smoke Out

The American Cancer Society is holding its annual Great American Smoke Out on Thursday, November 19.  If you have been thinking of quitting, this is a great opportunity to do so.  And CommonHealth has tools to help.

CommonHealth’s Quit for Life program is provided at no cost to employees, spouses and dependents over age 18 who are eligible to participate in the state health benefits program. Once you call  1-866-784-8454 to enroll, you will be assigned a Quit Coach who will work with you to create a personal quitting plan, which may include nicotine replacement patches, gum or covered smoking cessation drugs. Your Quit Coach can help you decide if one of these products will work for you.

Phishing Attacks Update:  Keeping the Mason Community Alert to Potential Email Hazards

This past week, two new phishing attacks circulated through the Mason community:  Update Your GMU.EDU Email Now and Attention! Verify Your Account.  Although their subject lines were different, both emails attempted to collect Mason user names and passwords.  Disguised as security checks, these emails threatened account termination if no response.

It is Mason’s policy to never request personal, financial or sensitive information through email, and any such request should be viewed as a warning sign for fraud.  Do not reply or click on any links in such emails…simply delete them.

Phishing attacks routinely target only a small number (200 or less) of the Mason population, bypassing the strong anti-phishing firewall and security shield measures in place (Mason blocks over 99% of the malicious email traffic received).

Staying safe and secure is as easy as 1 2 3:

(1) Always question unsolicited emails;
(2) Never provide personal/financial/sensitive information in response to an email; and
(3) Refrain from clicking on embedded links in emails.

Awareness…The Best Way to Fight Phishing.

Volunteer Interviewers for Medical Sciences Advisory Committee Needed

Because the Medical Sciences Advisory Committee (MSAC) processes over 100 declared prehealth applicants, the MSAC is always welcoming volunteers who on their own time can conduct mock 30-minute-long interviews with our student applicants. All interviews take place during the spring semester and are mutually scheduled with the intended applicant.

The MSAC is composed of representatives from academic services, University Life, and research-oriented units. All individuals receive a brief one-hour training session with Dr. Chuck that is scheduled at your convenience. The committee meets virtually but is welcome to all major functions organized by Dr. Chuck and the student clubs. All committee members submit an online interview feedback form to assist Dr. Chuck in his final evaluation letter.

The MSAC desires representation among its committee members that represents the diverse Mason student population and the patient population that these applicants will likely encounter in their future professional training. A science or health professional background is not necessary to participate, but an awareness of health issues, prior knowledge and training of evaluating interviewees, or an interest in social equity issues is preferred. Graduate students in the thesis stages of their master's or doctoral degrees are also welcome.

If you are interested, contact Dr. Chuck (993-9305, echuck@gmu.edu) by the end of November.

Each ornament comes in a blue gift box, ready for wrapping.

The CDC was honored this year by being named a 2009 Top Daycare Center by Northern Virginia magazine. Help support the CDC's great work and get a head start on your holiday shopping.

Tuesday, November 17 - Kiosk A, 12:00 noon - 2:00 pm
Monday, November 23 - Kiosk A, 12:00 noon - 2:00 pm

Toys For Tots Program at George Mason University

Participate in Toys for Tots at Mason. Donate a new, unwrapped toy at the following locations: Johnson Center next to Taco Bell; Admissions Office, Johnson Center, Room 213; and Mason Hall.

Monetary donations, contact Jim Miller, jmillh@gmu.edu.

Mission: The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Goal: The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.

Objective: The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.

The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is a five-year plan that will engage our entire university community in addressing a well-defined topic to enhance student learning at Mason.

Mason’s QEP topic is to foster a culture of scholarship and creative activity among students and faculty by engaging in disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and co-curricular inquiry and activities. Over the next year, the QEP Planning Committee will be drafting specific goals, program activities, and assessment plans that will be included in our final plan.

In order to be successful, we need the ideas of students, faculty, and staff for how best to implement this topic at Mason. Visit the QEP Café at http://masonqep.onmason.com by Thursday, December 17 to share your feedback and ideas.
