Update: Shutdown Electrical Power Outages - January 5 and 6

On Thursday, January 5 and Friday, January 6 (rain dates will be next business days) from 5:00 am - 5:30 am there will be a power outage that will effect the following locations:

Annual Elevator Hoistway and Pit Inspections

The Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHS) will conduct annual elevator hoistway and pit inspections at the Fairfax, Prince William, and Arlington campuses between January 3 and January 17.  Inspections will occur between 6:00 am and 2:00 pm. During inspections the elevators will be taken out of service. Notices will be posted on the front doors of each building and in each elevator lobby notifying occupants that the elevators are temporarily out of service. Every effort will be made to follow the schedule, however issues may necessitate a modified schedule. The schedule can be found at:

During the inspection, EHS staff and contractors from Simplex Grinnell will be working in the elevator machine rooms and in the elevator shafts to conduct their testing. This inspection is mandated by the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code, and we appreciate your cooperation in this process. If you have any questions contact EHS at 993-8448.

CommonHealth's Moving Forward with Fitness. With Moving Forward with Fitness we want to help you break through the most common barriers to exercise - time, money, skill and enjoyment. This program, available through February 2012, includes simple ideas for building an active lifestyle. Call Bridget Peabody, 993-6764 to bring this program to your department.

Iron Mason. Iron Mason is a Mason Recreation incentive program that encourages members to step up their physical activity during the Spring 2012 semester. Participants will walk, run, swim and bike their way up to the traditional Iron Man distance. Visit recreation.gmu.edu/wellness/Iron_Mason.

Save some Green, Bike to Campus. Mason has been designated as a Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists. Check out the Bicycle Commuter Benefit Program today and bike to work tomorrow.

Closed December 21 – January 21. Skyline will re-open at 3:00 pm on Sunday,  January 22.

Family Event - Cookies with the Patriot / New Children's Mascot Book 

For all families and everyone: come see the Patriot, Mason's mascot, in front of the Bookstore in the Johnson Center, on Saturday, January 7, from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm.  Join the Patriot for some fun, purchase his new illustrated book Hello, Patriot! and get it signed, take a picture with him, and enjoy some cookies and a drink.   
 
For the first time ever, Mason has a children's book that appeals directly to children, students, alumni, and others affiliated with Mason.  This new illustrated book Hello, Patriot! features Mason's beloved mascot, the Patriot. 

Follow the Patriot as he goes on a journey from Mason's classrooms to the Shack-a-Thon, from International Week to Mason Madness, and from the Patriot Center to The Center for the Arts.  Along the way, he enjoys the sights, sounds, diversity, and pride that make Mason such a special place. 

The book is available for purchase at the Mason Bookstore or online at http://gmu.bkstore.com. Hello, Patriot! is great for little ones, students, alumni, and anyone who loves Mason.

Equal Employment Opportunity and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

The next two Equal Employment Opportunity and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Sessions for Mason faculty, staff, and administrative faculty are:

The above schedule provides 2 different opportunities to take the course.  Each session is a single session (not consecutive) and approximately 1-hour in length.  For employees who are new to the University, in a supervisory role or up for promotion and/or tenure, are encouraged to register for one of these sessions.  Register on-line at http://equity.gmu.edu/education.html.

Fiscal Services Walk-in Assistance. Wednesdays from 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm in University Hall, Room 4139. Faculty and staff are welcome to stop by for assistance with issues related to eVA, Banner Finance, food and beverage, travel, reconciliations and PI Reports. No appointment is necessary. 

Fiscal Basics. Wednesday, January 4, 9:30 am - 11:30 am in University Hall, Room 2001. An introduction to fiscal processes at Mason including purchasing, travel, and Banner Finance.

Basic eVA Purchasing. Thursday, January 5, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm in University Hall, Room 2001. Hands-on workshop for utilizing Virginia's electronic procurement system to purchase most goods and services.

Purchasing Made Easy. Tuesday, January 10, 9:30 am - 11:30 am in University Hall, Room 2001. Provides general instructions related to purchasing items for $2,000 or more as well as use of the Payment Request form and the Mason P-Card (credit card).

PI Financial Reports. Thursday, January 12, 9:30 am - 11:00 am in University Hall, Room 2001. Hands-on training for using Discoverer reports to view financial transactions related to sponsored projects.

EPAF Training. Walk through Banner’s hiring process for part-time employees on January 10 from 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm.

eWork Upgrade: Lessons Learned. eWork users are invited to join HR & Payroll to discuss what worked or did not work during the eWork upgrade from 5.8 to 7.5.  Join us on January 10 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

Customer Service Certificate Program: Professional Communication (Verbal). Have you ever finished a conversation and felt like your message wasn’t heard?  Practice your verbal communication skills so you can deliver exceptional customer service with each interaction.  Join us on January 11 from 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm.

New SUPERvisor Series: Coaching Skills for Supervisors. All Mason supervisors are invited to explore the key strategies needed to be an effective supervisor-coach and get the most out of your staff on January 13 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.
