2005 Fiscal Year-End Purchasing and Accounts Payable Deadlines As the end of the fiscal year 2005 approaches on June 30, you need to be aware of some important dates related to the university's fiscal year-end. Please read and keep this information to assist in your year-end planning. Departments should begin planning their purchases and/or payments to ensure that supplies, equipment, and services paid from Educational and General funds are delivered and paid for by fiscal year-end. The cut-off dates below have been established to allow sufficient time necessary for Purchasing and Accounts Payable to complete the purchase, delivery, invoice submission and payment processes by June 30, 2005. Award Nominations Due February 18 Nominations for the Outstanding Achievement Award, the Exceptional Support Award and the Team Excellence Award are due in Human Resources on February 18. The presentation ceremony is scheduled for 1:00 pm on March 28. The Outstanding Achievement Award is presented for achievements that result in significant benefit to the University, school, institute or department. These achievements improve processes, save time or money and/or improve customer service. The recipients will receive $500. The Exceptional Support Award is designed to recognize those employees upon whom departments rely for the smooth running of daily departmental functions and operations. These employees consistently demonstrate exceptional customer service, initiative, enthusiasm, commitment and energy. Recipients of this award will receive $250. A new annual award, the Team Excellence Award, will be given to those who have demonstrated outstanding group achievement consisting of exceptional customer oriented services, cost and/or time savings, maintaining high safety standards, combining the talents of separate units, and encouraging teamwork in the workplace. Open House Featuring President Merten's Asia Trip President Merten invites interested Mason students, faculty, and staff to an Open House featuring information about his Fall 2004 trip to China, Korea, and Taiwan. GMU Players Perform Masked Theater George Mason University's theater department opens The Trial, a dramatization based on Franz Kafka's novel, on February 24. Showing in the TheaterSpace, the show runs February 24, 25, 26 and March 3, 4, 5 at 8:00 pm, and February 26, 27 and March 4, 6 at 2:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the box office at 993-8888, or at the time of the show in the Performing Arts building. Prices are $10.00 for general admission and $7.00 for students and seniors. Set in Kafka's world of 1920's Prague, it tells the story of Joseph K as he is arrested and tried for an unknown crime. Directed by Ken Elston this unique piece of theater is done entirely in mask. Incorporating a broad sense of movement and characterization the story brings to life the struggle of an individual as he becomes alienated by society. This play addresses mature themes and is not suitable for children. | ||
NASA’s Dr. Eugene Trinh will share his insights on Project Mars: The Space Program Reaching New Heights on Tuesday, February 15 in Mason Hall. Dr. Trinh's speech is part of the One Step Ahead: Hot Topics in Technology speaker series sponsored by the M.S. in Technology Management program at Mason’s School of Management. Dr. Trinh is the Director of the Human System Research and Technology Development Exploration in the Systems Mission Directorate at NASA. He is among the leaders spearheading US efforts to return astronauts to the moon, and then to Mars. In his remarks, Dr. Trinh will share an update on the plans, strategies and key technologies that will make NASA’s Vision for Space Exploration a reality. He will also share his perspectives on the space exploration technologies NASA is currently developing to advance US scientific, security and economic interests. Dr. Trinh has held senior positions at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Cal Tech and NASA’s Office of Biological and Physical Research, where his work led to investigations that will greatly impact the human exploration and development of space. He was also a payload specialist on the Space Shuttle Columbia during a 14-day space lab in June 1992. He holds degrees from Columbia and Yale Universities. | ||
DoIT Dialogue: Productivity Tools for Faculty Research Faculty research involves many different tasks, and this dialogue will address how different information technology tools (software, databases, online tools, distance conferencing, etc.) can be used to increase research productivity. An ITU task force is underway focusing on how our current online resources and services can be effectively prioritized to support faculty research needs. While not focused on large scale hardware or equipment support, this dialogue is an opportunity for faculty to give feedback about their information technology needs and to discuss how the ITU might support their research productivity. The presenters, co-chairs of the task force, are the Head of the Fenwick Library Reference Department and the Director of Learning Support Services. Audition dates for the GMU Players upcoming production of Mephisto adapted by Ariane Mnouchkine from the novel by Klaus Mann and translated by Timberlake Wertenbaker. This production which will be directed by Theater Professor Lynnie Raybuck explores politics as theatre, artistic ambition, and personal responsibility in a corrupt and corrupting regime are only a few of the epic themes that play out in this very human exploration of a small group of diverse people in Germany as the National Socialists take power. Opportunity to Increase English Language Fluency Starting February 14, any employee interested in improving their spoken or written English language skills can come to the Learning Center for instruction and practice. Black History Month Event - Panel Discussion on Brown vs. Board of Education A panel discussion on Road to Brown vs. Board of Education will be held on February 15, 7:30 pm, in the Johnson Center, Cinema. Report topics will include black high schools that surpassed white school systems (Dunbar High School, Washington, DC; Lincoln and Sumner high schools, Greater Kansas City). Explorations suggest that high-achieving Afro-American high schools aroudn the time of Brown vs. Boaord of Education (1954) may have been more widespread than currently assumed. Historical research on educational achievements in the AfroAmerican communiyt should not be delayed. Otherwise, first-hand knowledge and documentation from surviving observors may be lost. Cost is $30 per participant to be paid by departmental fund transfer. The one assessment covers all 3 sessions and will be charged whether or not the participant attends all 3 sessions. eVA, Virginia's web based purchasing system, has been implemented at George Mason University. A state-issued eVA user name and password are required to purchase goods and services through eVA.
