| Technology Assistants Program Requests Faculty Project Proposals for Fall 2005 The Technology Assistants Program (TAP) offers faculty the opportunity to work on a technology project with assistance from a trained undergraduate student. We are looking to add to our pool of project proposals to meet potential last-minute registration requests. Selected faculty will work with the student during the Fall 2005 semester; projects should be a semester long, and will be completed at the end of the Fall 2005 semester. Projects should fall into the categories of web design, spreadsheet/database design, or assisting other students with technology projects. Note that proposals to support instruction will receive priority, as will projects in which both the student and faculty member have a learning experience. Faculty who already have a student interested in working with them should submit the proposal form and student application together. Visit http://tap.gmu.edu for application materials and program information. Contact tap@gmu.edu for more information. | ||
| High Temperature Hot Water Outage The campus wide high temperature hot water (HTHW) outage required to complete installation of the new boiler is scheduled for Thursday, August 18 through Sunday, August 21. | The Office of the Provost has received guidelines for the 2006 NEH Summer Stipend Awards. All faculty teaching full-time must be nominated by their institutions. Each college and university in the United States and its jurisdictions may nominate two faculty members. Of the two, at least one must be a junior scholar with the rank of instructor, assistant professor, or an independent scholar at a comparable stage. Senior scholars hold the rank of associate professor or professor. Program description: Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the public's understanding of the humanities. Recipients usually produce scholarly articles, monographs on specialized subjects, books on broad topics, archaeological site reports, translations, editions or other scholarly tools. Award Information: Summer Stipends provide $5000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing. Recipients must work full-time on their projects for these two months, and may hold other research grants supporting the same project during that time. Summer Stipends normally support work carried out during the summer months, but arrangements can be made for other times of the year. Faculty who are interested should: 1. Check the guidelines at http://www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/stipends.html. 2. Submit the following documents to Marcy Glover (mglover2@gmu.edu), Office of the Provost by September 16: NEH cover letter, Vita, and Project Narrative. 3. All applicants will be informed within 1 week whether or not they have been selected so that the 2 nominees may finish completion of their application, which is due to the NEH by October 3, 2005, 5:00 pm. NOTE: The on-line application can be completed in stages and edited until October 3 or until the submit button has been clicked. For more information, contact Marcy Glover, Global and Educational Programs Coordinator, Office of the Provost, 993-8722. | ||

Year-end? The semester hasn't even begun yet. How can we possibly be thinking about December 31 when it's 90+ degrees outside? It's never too early to think about what's coming down the road. So with that in mind, we've changed the notes on Employee Self Service (ESS) in Banner to remind faculty and staff to keep all of their addresses at Mason in sync. Changing your permanent address in Banner changes is for HR/Payroll only. If you do business with other areas of the University (e.g. Accounts Payable or Student Accounts), you'll have to change your address with them as well. Additionally, we've also added a reminder about not inactivating your last permanent address when you leave the university. Payroll needs an active permanent address at all times to process and mail year-end statements (i.e. W-2s). It's also a good idea to take a look at your tax withholding and make any adjustments necessary to ease your burden come April 15. Non-Exempt Employees Can Choose Leave or Pay for Their Overtime Hours. It's time for non-exempt employees (i.e. overtime eligible for all hours over 40 worked in a week) to initiate or change their election regarding how their overtime is to be handled by the Payroll Department. All non-exempt employees have the option of being paid for their overtime (which is the default) or to accumulate their overtime as leave. If you would like to change your election from receiving pay to receiving leave, complete the form located at http://hr.gmu.edu/forms/OvertimeLeaveEmployeeAgreement.doc and submit the completed form to the Payroll Department by Friday, September 9. Unfortunately, this deadline is firm and we cannot accept forms after September 9. If you have made an election in the past and do not want to change your election, you do not have to do anything. If you want to receive pay for any overtime you earn, you also do not have to complete a form. Remember that your election commits you to your choice for one year until the next open enrollment period. This means that if you elect leave accumulation, you will receive leave and not pay for any overtime worked during the next academic year. Contact Boo Dutta, Leave Coordinator, at 993-2628 if you have any questions. Direct Deposit Details. One last reminder as the new school year draws closer. When completing direct deposit forms (on line or on paper), use one of your checks for the account data you submit and not a deposit slip. Deposit slips are internal bank documents and in many cases they do not have the correct bank routing number on them. Checks, however, are external documents and they will carry the correct bank routing number. September Commonwealth Commuter Choice Benefits. Just a reminder that requests for September SmarTrip Card funds are due today. For more information, visit http://hr.gmu.edu/benefits/misc.html. | ||
| I. C. E. stands for In Case of an Emergency. In the event you are disabled due to an injury, (example: unconscious) how would medical staff know if you were on any medications, had any medical conditions or who to contact In Case of an Emergency. Listed below are some suggestions from the Safety Office: 1. You can type “I C E” in your mobile phone address book, and after it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted In Case of an Emergency. If you have more than one person, enter: ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc. 2. You can also type up your information, shrink it down to a credit card size then laminate it and put it in your wallet.
