What is C.V.S.?

The Occupational Health and Safety Newsletter posted the following safety tip.

Computer use is involved in just about every type of job these days, and the number one complaint of computer users is eyestrain, or Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). The symptoms of CVS include: eye strain, blurred vision, headache, dry or irritated eyes, neck or back aches, double vision or color distortion.

While using a computer may be inevitable, eye and vision problems are not. The three areas of concern to be reviewed are: the computer environment; the work habits; and the visual condition of the employee.

To help resolve this issue, we suggest following the "3-B" approach: Blink, Breathe and Break. Taking breaks can best be accomplished following the "20/20/20" rule: Every 20 minutes, Take 20 seconds and Look 20 feet away.

Message from Carol Henderson, HR, Training and Development Manager

In a few short days I will be retiring from George Mason University, but I could not leave without acknowledging everyone who has helped make our training program a success. Thank you to everyone who supported the training culture, who helped with room arrangements, provided technical and equipment support and teleconferencing. Thanks also to those who facilitated sessions, who helped to get the word out, who served on the Staff Enrichment Day committee and who made suggestions for new workshops. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed knowing all of you who attended workshops and especially the SUPERvisor Series. I have met so many wonderful and interesting people; I will miss you all and hope that you will continue to Make a Difference at Mason.

Project to Improve Accuracy of Administrative Data

If you question whether some data that comes from a central administrative database is accurate and you would like the Administrative Systems Leadership Team to investigate the situation, email the particulars to data-accuracy@gmu.edu.

Data inaccuracies can occur at the data entry point or later when processes are run that have not been fully tested. Testing is sample driven and errors that occur with very low frequency can be missed by the testing process. Invalid data can result when people lack an understanding of the logic behind data fields and processes.

The Phase II Administrative Systems Leadership Team has been charged with recommending changes in policies and procedures to ensure that the university’s commitment to providing accurate and valid data is realized. Among its actions will be to first make sure that there are common definitions for reporting data elements and common data entry standards and that everyone who needs to know about these does know. Any new definitions or standards that are developed will be shared for comment with the appropriate stakeholders. Post entry audit reports will be developed, where these do not already exist, in order to facilitate identifying and correcting discrepancies. Managers will be held accountable to review these audit reports and to hold people accountable when the error rate is unacceptable. Managers are responsible to ensure that their data entry people are properly trained and have the skills needed to maintain data entry integrity. The Team will also make recommendations to the Executive Council concerning organizational restructuring and resource reallocation when it appears that data entry integrity can not be achieved under the current organizational structure.

The university community will be kept informed of the resolution of data accuracy/validity issues via a web page to be developed during the Fall semester.
