The Safety Office wants to remind you that with the start of school there are many new drivers and pedestrians on our campuses. Everyone needs to exercise extra caution both while driving and walking. This year, as you can easily tell by driving around the Fairfax Campus, there is a significant amount of construction that makes negotiating the campus difficult. Take extra care while driving on all campuses as a record number of students and drivers get acquainted with each other and the new traffic patterns. Help set the example by driving in a safe and courteous manner. If you are walking on campuses, observe the very basic safety tenants we learned in grade school and never assume you have the right of way, even if you're in a crosswalk. |

The Office of the Provost has received guidelines for the 2006 NEH Summer Stipend Awards. All faculty teaching full-time must be nominated by their institutions. Each college and university in the United States and its jurisdictions may nominate two faculty members. Of the two, at least one must be a junior scholar with the rank of instructor, assistant professor, or an independent scholar at a comparable stage. Senior scholars hold the rank of associate professor or professor. Program description: Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the public's understanding of the humanities. Recipients usually produce scholarly articles, monographs on specialized subjects, books on broad topics, archaeological site reports, translations, editions or other scholarly tools. Award Information: Summer Stipends provide $5000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing. Recipients must work full-time on their projects for these two months, and may hold other research grants supporting the same project during that time. Summer Stipends normally support work carried out during the summer months, but arrangements can be made for other times of the year. Faculty who are interested should: 1. Check the guidelines at http://www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/stipends.html. 2. Submit the following documents to Marcy Glover (mglover2@gmu.edu), Office of the Provost by September 16: NEH cover letter, Vita, and Project Narrative. 3. All applicants will be informed within 1 week whether or not they have been selected so that the 2 nominees may finish completion of their application, which is due to the NEH by October 3, 2005, 5:00 pm. NOTE: The on-line application can be completed in stages and edited until October 3 or until the submit button has been clicked. For more information, contact Marcy Glover, Global and Educational Programs Coordinator, Office of the Provost, 993-8722. |

ITU is proud to proclaim that the “Duck Man Winnith”. Yes, Classroom Technologies very own Casey Collings has been awarded the September ITU Employee of the Month. Casey, an AV Technician in the Equipment Distribution area of Classroom Technologies began honing his creative skills at VCU and then came to George Mason as a student wage worker in the AV department. Although his title is AV Technician, Casey wears many hats and provides many varied services. After designing the graphics for the Classroom Tech web page, Casey was asked and happily agreed to take on the responsibility of designing the monthly flyer for the DoIT Duck Award. An award, since he started as a wage worker, near and dear to his heart. However, you ask….what is the DoIt Duck Award? The DoIT Duck award is an award for DoIT wage employees recognizing a strong contribution and promotion of positive morale. Casey’s flyers have been creative and his imagination immeasurable making the production and distribution of the flyers one of anticipation and universal enjoyment when posted. Join ITU on Friday, September 2 in Dr. Hughes office at Mason Hall to say congratulations, and, to meet the Duck Man who thinks up these crazy flyers. |

New Drop-Off/Pick Up Area Adjacent to Sandy Creek Parking Deck Welcome to our new freshman class and welcome back to all of our returning students. Be advised that this year we have established an area of campus that will be used for dropping off or picking up students, faculty and guests. The new drop-off area is the circle on Sandy Creek Way, at the top of the hill adjacent to the Sandy Creek Parking Deck. Students will benefit from the convenience of this location and be able to purchase coffee and other beverages in the shuttle waiting room located at the front of the new Parking Services Building. And for your added convenience, The Mason Express shuttle buses also will be using this area as one of two spots on campus for their scheduled stops. (See http://shuttle.gmu.edu for more information on The Mason Express.) Do not attempt to use other areas of campus such as the loading dock of the Johnson Center for drop-offs as they cannot safely accommodate this activity. Cars in violation will be ticketed and/or towed for the safety of others. Again, welcome back and thank you for your cooperation. For further information, contact Ann Moran at 993-8868. |

Access to Chesapeake Modules During Construction: Registrar, Financial Aid and Student Accounts Offices There will be no direct vehicle access to the North and South Chesapeake modules when construction in the Northeast Sector begins as Chesapeake River Way will be closed to non-construction traffic. This affects student access to the Registrar, Financial Aid and Student Accounts. Pedestrian routes from central campus will not change. However, the closest accessible parking will be in the lot north of the Finley Building and in the SUB I lot. Most student transactions can be handled remotely through Patriot Web self-service, phone or FAX. In person transactions for those students who cannot physically access the North and South Chesapeake modules will be facilitated by the Disability Resource Center. Students who need assistance should contact Ms. Debbie Wyne, Disability Resource Center, at 993-2474. For information about construction impacts on campus, see http://www.gmu.edu/departments/facilities/construction/ For information about the Northeast Sector Development, see http://facilities.gmu.edu/projects/ne/ |
